Description

Automatic compression, bulk optimization and Directory Smush

Smush handles image compression automatically on upload and can optimize existing media individually or in bulk.

Its lossless and lossy options let site owners choose a compression approach, and it works with images already in the media library without requiring re-uploads. Directory Smush extends optimization to images outside the library, such as files in theme or plugin folders. Originals are retained by default; full-size compression is a Pro feature.

Lazy loading and image delivery options

Smush covers basic image loading improvements for free, while several delivery options require Pro.

  • Lazy loading: load images across the site as they are needed; Pro also adds image preload.
  • WebP and AVIF: Pro converts images to these formats and serves them to supported browsers.
  • Image CDN: Pro serves images through a global network of 119 servers, with up to 500 GB of bandwidth, to support delivery to visitors in different locations.

Image sizing and layout stability

Pro can resize images to fit their containers and add missing dimensions, helping address common performance warnings and layout shifts.

Automatic resizing targets PageSpeed’s image-sizing warning by serving images closer to their displayed size. Adding missing width and height attributes helps browsers reserve space as pages load, reducing unexpected movement; these tools may suit sites with many differently sized images.

A broad feature set with several delivery tools reserved for Pro

Smush combines accessible compression and loading features with Pro-only tools for image formats, delivery and sizing.

  • Free features: compression, bulk optimization, Directory Smush and site-wide lazy loading cover core image workflows.
  • Pro features: WebP and AVIF delivery, the image CDN, automatic sizing and preload add further delivery controls, so sites needing these capabilities should account for the paid tier.
  • Compatibility: Smush states compatibility with WooCommerce, Gutenberg, Elementor and WPBakery, which makes it relevant to stores and sites built with these tools.

Recent updates and a high rate of resolved support threads

Smush shows recent maintenance and strong public support and adoption signals, which can reassure site owners seeking an actively maintained image tool.

  • Maintenance and support: the plugin was updated nine days ago, and 88% of its support threads are marked resolved; that resolution rate points to a responsive support record.
  • Ratings and adoption: user ratings are excellent, and Smush ranks among the directory’s most widely installed plugins.
  • Our assessment: Smush suits sites that want routine compression and lazy loading, with Pro available for more extensive image delivery and sizing. The main trade-off is that several advanced controls sit behind the paid tier, so check whether those features match your performance priorities.
