What is WP Rank?
WP Rank is an independent directory that scores and ranks every public WordPress plugin based on real usage data pulled directly from the WordPress.org API. No sponsored placements, no affiliate rankings — just numbers.
Why We Built This
Choosing a WordPress plugin used to mean wading through star ratings inflated by plugin authors nudging users, install counts frozen in time, and "best plugin" lists that happen to link to the author's own products. WP Rank was built to cut through that noise with a single, transparent score derived entirely from public data.
How the WP Rank Score Is Calculated
Every plugin in the directory receives a WP Rank Score — a composite number that weighs four independent signals. There is no cap on the score, so the best plugins always rise to the top.
The backbone of the score. Calculated as log₁₀(active_installs) × 6. Using a logarithmic scale means the gap between a 1 K-install plugin and a 10 K-install plugin is the same as the gap between 100 K and 1 M — representing real-world utility growth rather than raw numbers.
Calculated as (rating / 100) × 30 × confidence. The confidence multiplier — capped at 1 once a plugin reaches 50 ratings — prevents a plugin with a single 5-star review from outranking a well-tested plugin with thousands of ratings.
A plugin updated within the last 30 days earns the full 20 points. After that, the score decays linearly over the following 330 days, reaching 0 for plugins that have not been touched in a year. Abandoned plugins are naturally penalized without needing a separate flag.
Calculated as log₁₀(total_downloads) × 1.2. A smaller signal that rewards plugins with a long track record of downloads, even if their current active-install count is modest.

Plugins are grouped into four tiers based on active installs, and each tier is refreshed on a different schedule so we focus compute where it matters most:
Data Sources
All plugin data — names, descriptions, install counts, ratings, download totals, and last-updated timestamps — is fetched from the public WordPress.org Plugin API. WP Rank does not modify this data. We store periodic snapshots to power the download-trend charts visible on each plugin's detail page.
