Payment methods, currencies and checkout options
The responsive checkout combines a broad selection of payment methods with localized details and currency options.
- Payment choice: The gateway advertises 23 methods, including cards, Link, Apple Pay and Google Pay, buy-now-pay-later services such as Klarna, Affirm and Afterpay/Clearpay, and local methods including Bancontact and Alipay.
- Localized checkout: Error messages can be localized, right-to-left languages are supported, and input fields adjust automatically based on payment method and country. This can help stores serve international customers without building separate checkout flows.
- Local currencies: Adaptive Pricing lets customers pay in their local currency across 150+ countries. Stripe itself is available to merchants in 46 countries, so store owners should confirm their country is supported before planning around the gateway.
- Checkout transition: Express Checkout has replaced Payment Request Buttons, while Legacy Checkout is no longer available. Stores relying on older checkout setups should plan around Express Checkout.
Fraud controls, security and in-person payments
Stripe’s fraud and payment-security tools support safer online checkout, while in-person payments require a compatible payment route.
Stripe Radar uses machine learning to detect and flag potentially fraudulent transactions. Stripe Elements hosted fields help protect card data and support PCI-DSS compliance, while Strong Customer Authentication is supported. These tools add security measures, but live mode also requires an SSL certificate on the store.
For in-person sales, merchants can use a Stripe Terminal M2 reader or Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android through WooCommerce POS in the free WooCommerce mobile app. Stores considering in-person payments should account for the hardware or mobile POS setup they plan to use.
Subscriptions, payouts and testing
The gateway covers recurring payments, payout options and separate test and production modes.
- Subscriptions: Recurring payments are supported through WooCommerce Subscriptions, with various payment methods available. Stores planning subscription sales need that extension.
- Instant Payouts: Eligible merchants can receive payouts within minutes; eligibility should be checked before relying on faster access to funds.
- Testing modes: API keys determine whether the gateway uses production or sandbox mode, and an admin setting switches between them. This allows stores to test payment flows before accepting live transactions.
- Sofort changes: Sofort is no longer offered at checkout. Existing Sofort orders can still be refunded, and subscriptions started with Sofort continue renewing, so merchants should account for those existing transactions.
A broad payment feature set backed by active support
WooCommerce Stripe has a widely installed footprint, but its mixed user rating means extensive payment coverage should not be treated as proof of consistent satisfaction.
The support record shows 38 threads, with 74% marked resolved, a meaningful resolution rate for store owners who need help. The plugin was updated within the past few weeks. It may suit stores that need multiple payment types and international checkout options, but owners should weigh that breadth against mixed feedback and verify that the specific payment methods and payout options they need are available to them.
