Languages, translated content and language switching
Polylang’s free core covers a broad range of multilingual publishing needs.
It supports translations for posts, pages, media, categories, tags, custom post types, taxonomies and RSS feeds, including right-to-left scripts. Languages can use URL codes, subdomains or separate domains; categories, tags and other metadata can be copied to new translations. Classic menus and widgets, customizable language switchers and Yoast SEO compatibility make it a practical fit for sites using those tools.
Translation workflow features in Polylang Pro
Polylang Pro adds tools for managing translations and extending compatibility.
- Editor support: Adds language options to the block editor and supports translatable template parts in the Site Editor.
- Content management: Duplicate or synchronize translated content, and share URL slugs across languages or translate additional slug types.
- Translation tools: Use DeepL machine translation or import and export content in XLIFF format for professional translation workflows.
- Compatibility and help: Improves compatibility with plugins such as ACF Pro and provides premium support. Sites with custom fields or outsourced translation may benefit most from these paid features.
WooCommerce translations require a separate add-on
WooCommerce compatibility is provided through the separate Polylang for WooCommerce add-on.
- Store content: Translate shop, checkout, cart and account pages, product categories, global attribute terms and customer emails.
- Product data: Synchronize product metadata and use WooCommerce’s native CSV import and export tools.
- Extensions and API: Compatibility includes WooCommerce Subscriptions, Product Bundles, Bookings and Shipment Tracking; WooCommerce REST API access is available with Polylang Pro.
- Support: The add-on includes premium support, so store owners should account for it as a separate paid requirement.
A flexible multilingual core, with added costs for advanced workflows
Polylang offers substantial multilingual capability in its free core, while more specialized workflows and WooCommerce require paid products.
The plugin is widely installed and has an excellent rating across many reviews, and it was updated recently. Those signals support its standing, but public support activity is a consideration: 21% of 28 support threads are marked resolved. The core may suit sites focused on multilingual content and language switching; budget for Pro or the WooCommerce add-on if you need their specific workflow or store features.
