Description

Replace media without changing existing links

The Replace Media option in Edit Media lets you upload a new file in place of an existing attachment.

Choose Just replace the file to keep the attachment name; the replacement must be the same file type. The alternative uses the new file’s name and type, updates links to point to it, and offers optional folder and date settings. This gives site owners a choice between keeping existing paths and changing them deliberately.

Background removal is a beta feature

Background removal sends images to ShortPixel’s API and returns a preview before you replace the original.

  • PNG output: Images that start as PNGs receive a transparent background; other formats default to white.
  • Background color: Choose another color with the color picker if white is unsuitable.
  • Beta availability: The feature is free for reasonable usage while in beta. Since images are sent to ShortPixel’s API, consider that processing before using it; add add_filter( 'emr/feature/background', '__return_false' ); to disable the feature.

Modification dates and replacement troubleshooting

A shortcode can display when a media file was last modified, while a few basic checks can help diagnose replacements that look unchanged.

  • Shortcode: Use [file_modified id=XX format=XXXX]; the media ID is required and the format is optional. Find the ID in the file’s edit URL, so this is useful when displaying an image’s update date in a post or page.
  • Date format: The optional format uses PHP date() formatting tags, such as Y-m-d; without it, the site’s date and time settings apply.
  • Unchanged replacement: Refresh the browser to rule out a cached file, then check that WordPress can write to the uploads folder. If permissions are the issue, the site operator may need to correct them.

A focused tool with support to weigh

Enable Media Replace centers on replacing Media Library files in place, and its public indicators suggest broad adoption alongside limited support evidence.

The single-purpose workflow suits site owners who regularly update files without wanting to remove and re-upload them manually. It was updated within the last week and has a good user rating, based on a moderate number of reviews. Support shows 2 of 5 threads resolved (40%), which offers only a limited basis for judging responsiveness; sites that rely on prompt help may want to weigh that uncertainty.
