Description

Adding CSS and JavaScript without editing theme files

The plugin lets site owners add custom CSS and JavaScript without changing theme or plugin files.

Its syntax-highlighting editor supports multiple snippets, printed inline or from external files, in the header or footer and on the frontend or admin side. Because the code is independent of theme files, customizations remain after a theme change—a useful fit for changes that should survive a redesign.

Publishing, caching and code responsibility

Publishing status, file access and cache state can all affect whether saved code appears.

  • Saved code: The plugin caches code in files when you save it, avoiding repeated database queries for the code.
  • Published status: Make sure a snippet is published, not left as a draft or moved to the trash.
  • Caching plugins: Clear the site cache if saved code does not appear.
  • Uploads folder: Confirm that wp-content/uploads/custom-css-js exists and is writable.
  • Code responsibility: The plugin prints code as entered and does not modify, check or validate it, so errors in a snippet are yours to address.
  • Permissions: Administrators can publish, edit and delete custom code by default. The plugin also creates a Web Designer role that can be assigned to a non-admin user.

Plain CSS in the free version and preprocessor limits

The free version supports plain CSS, but not LESS or Sass.

It also supports @import, @font-face and image URLs pointing to files in the Media Library. For sites that rely on a CSS preprocessor, the FAQ directs users to the Pro version; otherwise, hand-written CSS covers the documented styling options.

A current, widely adopted option with a small support sample

Adoption is wide and ratings are good, though based on a moderate number of reviews.

Version 3.55 was updated within the last week, and all four listed support threads are resolved. That resolved share is encouraging, but the small thread count cannot establish support capacity over time; sites with critical custom code should account for that limited signal when choosing a support path.
