Sidebar widgets for posts and images
Widget-based content is a central thread in the Sidebar category, especially posts, images and other sidebar additions.
- Recent Posts Widget With Thumbnails: Its name points to recent-post content paired with thumbnails; it has 100,000 active installs and was updated this month.
- Image Widget and Simple Image Widget: Both names indicate image-focused widget uses.
- Meks Simple Flickr Widget and Sidebar Login: Their names point to Flickr content and login forms, respectively.
- Widget overlap: 321 plugins share the widget tag, while 35 share the post tag, underscoring the category’s connection to widget-based content.
Creating and assigning custom sidebars
A distinct group of plugins centers on creating or managing sidebars and determining where they appear.
Custom Sidebars, Content Aware Sidebars, Ocean Custom Sidebar and SMK Sidebar Generator are prominent examples in this cluster. Their names indicate custom sidebar creation or management; page and category tags add context around placement-related uses, appearing alongside 17 and 16 plugins in the category, respectively.
Sticky sidebars and widget placement in content
Some plugins focus on keeping sidebars in position, while others point to displaying widgets beyond a conventional sidebar.
- Fixed Widget and Sticky Elements for WordPress and WP Sticky Sidebar represent the sticky-positioning strand; they have 70,000 and 10,000 active installs, respectively.
- Widgets on Pages points to placing widgets within page content, and 21 plugins overlap with the shortcode tag.
What adoption and update figures mean for choosing
The category is broad, but only a small number of plugins have reached higher install thresholds, and recent maintenance is uneven.
Of 475 plugins, 3 have at least 100,000 active installs and 11 have at least 10,000. Just 14% were updated in the last year. Among prominent plugins, Recent Posts Widget With Thumbnails, Content Aware Sidebars and Sidebar Login were updated this month, while Fixed Widget and Sticky Elements for WordPress was updated 43 months ago. These figures make install counts and update recency useful signals to compare, rather than assuming they are consistent across the category.
