Caching and broader performance optimization
The category includes many cache-tagged plugins, alongside listings whose names point to broader optimization.
- Cache overlap: 216 plugins share the cache tag, and 70 share the caching tag.
- Cache-labelled listings: LiteSpeed Cache, WP Fastest Cache, WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache and Breeze Cache all have Cache in their names.
- Broader optimization label: Autoptimize is also a prominent listing; its name signals a different emphasis. Names are a useful starting point, but check each plugin’s stated scope when comparing options.
Image optimization and WebP
Image optimization and WebP are distinct image-related areas represented in the category.
The image-optimization tag is shared by 67 plugins, while the WebP tag is shared by 95. Image Optimizer and WebP Express are prominent listings; consider which of these image-related areas matches your needs, then check each plugin’s stated scope.
Where performance overlaps with other plugin roles
Performance-tagged plugins sit alongside several other plugin roles, so the category covers varied scopes.
- Optimization and speed: These tags overlap with 182 and 173 plugins respectively; Core Web Vitals overlaps with 58.
- Security and SEO: The category also overlaps with 108 security-tagged and 71 SEO-tagged plugins.
- Different listings: ManageWP Worker has 1 million active installs, Redis Object Cache has 500,000, and Custom Fonts has 400,000. Check what each plugin actually claims to do rather than assuming its role from the category alone.
A large category with a small leading group and active maintenance
The category is broad, but relatively few plugins reach high install counts, and most have been updated within the last year.
Of 942 plugins, 63 have at least 10,000 active installs and 23 have 100,000 or more. Seventy-four percent were updated within the last year. Among the leading listings, LiteSpeed Cache has 7 million active installs and was updated this month; Speed Optimizer, WP Fastest Cache, WP Super Cache and Image Optimizer each have 1 million. Several other leading listings were also updated this month, while others were updated one or two months ago. Popularity and update recency are useful context, but neither establishes suitability.
