A fragmented category with a small, unevenly maintained leader group
The category has a broad base but only a few plugins reach the highest install threshold, while update recency varies across the larger group.
There are 866 plugins in Images; five have at least 100,000 active installs and 25 have at least 10,000. The five leaders range from 100,000 to 800,000 installs. All were updated this month or within the last two months: Autoptimize and Responsive Lightbox & Gallery have excellent ratings, WebP Express a good rating, and Lightbox & Modal Popup and Modern Image Formats mixed ratings. Ratings also vary in review volume, from many reviews to few.
Across the category, 32% were updated within the last year. That contrasts with the recent updates among the five most-installed options and makes it useful to consider each plugin's update recency and rating alongside its install count.
