Lightboxes and image galleries
Lightboxes and galleries form a distinct strand among the category’s leading plugin names. Firelight Lightbox and Responsive Lightbox & Gallery each have at least 100,000 active installs, as does Simple Lightbox.
The overlap reinforces that focus: 125 plugins are also tagged gallery, while 33 overlap with lightbox.
Image compression, resizing and media processing
Names across the leading plugins point to several different image-processing concerns.
- reSmush.it: Its full listing name identifies it as an image compressor.
- Imsanity: A widely installed image plugin, though its name alone does not specify a particular processing task.
- ImageMagick Engine: The name suggests an image-processing tool or engine.
- Simple Image Sizes: The name points to image sizing as its apparent focus.
Image placement and media-library tasks
Other leading names suggest use cases for placing images and handling media-library items.
- Image Widget and Menu Image suggest image placement in widgets and menus; the category overlaps with the widget tag across 49 plugins.
- Default Featured Image points to featured-image handling, while 48 plugins overlap with the thumbnail tag.
- Phoenix Media Rename suggests a media-renaming task, and All In One Favicon indicates a separate image-related use case.
- The media and upload overlaps—81 and 39 plugins, respectively—add further media-library and file-handling themes.
A broad category with a small popular tier and uneven maintenance
The Image category spans 793 plugins, but only a small group reaches high install counts, and update activity is uneven.
Seven plugins have at least 100,000 active installs and 34 have at least 10,000; 24% of category plugins were updated in the last year. Firelight Lightbox has 200,000 installs, an excellent rating, and was updated this month; Imsanity also has 200,000 installs and an excellent rating, and was updated two months ago. By contrast, Menu Image was updated 15 months ago and All In One Favicon 39 months ago. Ratings also vary, from excellent to good among the leading plugins.
