RSS feeds for publishing platforms
Feed plugins include RSS options tailored to specific external publishing services.
GN Publisher: Google News Compatible RSS Feeds, RSS for Yandex Turbo, and RSS for Yandex Zen are examples named for those destinations. The category also overlaps with the related news tag, which appears on 18 plugins.
Feed updates, aggregation, and distribution
The listings cover both feed distribution and importing or aggregating feeds from elsewhere.
- WebSub (FKA. PubSubHubbub): With 100,000 active installs, it represents the feed discovery or distribution side of the category.
- FeedWordPress: At 8,000 active installs, it is an example associated with importing and aggregating external feeds.
- Podcast Importer SecondLine: Its listing is a podcast-focused example of feed importing; the related podcast tag appears on 11 plugins.
Feed content, widgets, and display
Other plugins focus on what feed content includes or how feeds appear on site.
- RSS Includes Pages: Its name points to including pages in RSS feeds.
- Send Images to RSS: Its name points to adding images to RSS content; the related featured-image tag overlaps with 11 plugins.
- Super RSS Reader and RSS Feed Widget: These names indicate feed display tools, fitting a category overlap of 37 plugins with the widget tag.
- Easy Twitter Feed Widget Plugin: Its name connects feed display with Twitter; 18 plugins overlap with the Twitter tag.
Adoption and maintenance are uneven across feed plugins
The category has broad variety, but relatively few listings reach higher install counts, and recent updates are not universal.
Of 340 plugins, 1 has at least 100,000 active installs and 5 have at least 10,000. Just 28% were updated in the last year. Several leading listings have more recent update activity: GN Publisher: Google News Compatible RSS Feeds, Super RSS Reader, and FeedWordPress were updated this month, while WebSub and RSS Includes Pages were updated two months ago.
By contrast, Easy Twitter Feed Widget Plugin was updated 108 months ago and Send Images to RSS 75 months ago. These figures show why install counts and update recency are separate considerations when comparing listings; a larger audience does not, by itself, indicate a recent update.
