Image descriptions and media accessibility
Image descriptions are a prominent strand of the Accessibility category, alongside plugins focused on images more broadly.
The alt-text tag appears on 134 plugins, while images appears on 54. Listings such as Auto Image Attributes From Filename With Bulk Update and Alt Text AI reflect this focus in their names. There is overlap with SEO (92 plugins), image-SEO (41), and AI (53), so image-related accessibility sits alongside search and AI themes.
Accessibility tools for site interfaces and content
Names among the leading plugins point to distinct site features, not interchangeable accessibility solutions.
- Responsive Menu: The name points to menu-related site interfaces.
- My Calendar: A calendar-focused listing, distinct from menu or appearance tools.
- Dark Mode: The name indicates a display-related focus.
- SimpleTOC: A table-of-contents listing, oriented toward page content structure.
- Text-to-speech: This related tag covers 41 plugins and signals another distinct content-related area.
Standards, audits, and accessibility claims
Standards-related tags and checker-focused names form one strand of the category, separate from plugins named for specific site features.
The WCAG tag appears on 196 plugins, ADA on 65, and a11y on 99. Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker is one of the leading listings whose name explicitly signals a checker focus. When comparing options, distinguish tools framed around checking or standards from entries centered on images, menus, calendars, or other features; those labels describe different areas of focus.
A broad category with few widely installed plugins and recent updates
The category includes many listings, but only a small number have reached the highest install counts.
- Category size: There are 586 plugins, with 2 at 100,000 or more active installs and 17 at 10,000 or more.
- Leading plugin: Web Accessibility (formally known as Ally) has 500,000 active installs, but the category’s leading listing is far ahead of most others by adoption.
- Update activity: 79% of plugins were updated in the last year. Among the leading listings, updates range from this month for several plugins to 10 months ago for Accessibility by UserWay.
- Ratings: Ratings vary among leading plugins: Web Accessibility is rated poor, Auto Image Attributes From Filename With Bulk Update excellent, and Accessibility by UserWay good. Consider ratings alongside adoption and update recency when comparing listings.
